Vehicle efficiency: U.S. Department of Energy / EPA database (vehicle ratings snapshot dated October 11, 2026). Different engine and trim configurations may have different fuel costs. Gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains are listed separately in the Model choices when needed.
Gasoline & diesel: EIA U.S. weekly national retail gasoline and on-highway diesel prices, observed October 5, 2026: regular $4.354, midgrade $4.990, premium $5.400, diesel $6.199 per gallon. Prices shown with their observation date and updated when new published data is available to the site.
Electricity: EIA U.S. residential electricity average, July 2026: 18.31¢/kWh. Dated U.S. national residential average; public fast-charging costs may differ. EPA kWh/100-mile ratings already include Level 2 charging losses, so no extra charging-loss multiplier is added. Public fast charging can cost substantially more. See EPA charging-loss methodology.
Other costs: AAA Your Driving Costs 2025 found 11.04¢ per mile for maintenance, repairs and tires (new vehicles), and $1,694/year for personal-use insurance. GigCost uses that benchmark to develop illustrative expense categories, adds aging and mileage adjustments, a $360/year illustrative rideshare insurance allowance (not a quoted nationwide premium), an estimated $250/year in fees, and a smooth provisional depreciation amount; these are not verified quotes for this exact model.
Annual driving: 30,000 total miles per year assumed to allocate fixed annual expenses. This number is fixed behind the scenes so drivers only enter four fields; different annual use would change the estimate. No loan interest, income taxes, vehicle cleaning, tolls, parking, or earnings for driver time are included. Costs are spread over all miles, including pickups and deadheading.
Vehicle-value research: ForCar (CC BY 4.0), listing research data as of October 2026. Its model/year asking-price averages are not included in this cost-per-mile estimate. ForCar values can mix trims and powertrains. ForCar pricing is market context only; it does not drive depreciation. The current depreciation interpolation is a provisional assumption, not validated value data.
About GigCost
GigCost Beta helps drivers estimate the full allocated cost per mile of a vehicle using four inputs: year, make, model, and odometer miles. It uses EPA vehicle ratings, dated EIA U.S. national energy prices, and disclosed modeled allowances for repairs, maintenance, tires, depreciation, insurance and fees.
The calculator assumes 30,000 total miles per year and provides planning estimates—not a quote, a warranty, an exact accounting of your own vehicle, or a prediction of a specific repair. Financing, taxes on earnings, tolls, parking and the driver's time are excluded. Results may differ materially from what an owner pays.

Privacy at GigCost
No account and no calculator submission. In this beta, your year, make, model and mileage are processed locally in your browser. The calculator does not send those entries to GigCost's server. We do not intentionally use analytics cookies, advertising trackers or user accounts in this build.
The website host may receive routine technical information when your browser requests site files (for example your IP address and browser information). When enabled, the page requests a public energy-price file. Clicking an external data source takes you to that site's policies.
If you choose to send feedback by email, your email provider handles the message and we receive the details you voluntarily include. Do not send sensitive personal information. Contact: feedback@gigcost.com. This privacy information describes the current beta website as of October 12, 2026.
